Mavrovo National Park
North Macedonia’s largest national park covering 780 km², positioned between the Korab, Bistra, and Šar mountain ranges with over 52 peaks exceeding 2,000m altitude. The park encompasses the artificial Mavrovo Lake and the Radika River gorge, featuring diverse wildlife, dense forests, and the country’s highest peak, Golem Korab at 2,764m.
Galicica National Park
Galicica is a karst mountain national park covering 227 km² between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, rising to 2,254m at its highest peak Magaro. The park is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity with 11 endemic plant species, 26 endemic animal species, and 1,644 butterfly species, making it a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Pelister National Park
Pelister National Park near the village of Nižepole on Baba Mountain, established in 1948 as Yugoslavia’s first national park, covering 171.5 km² with elevations from 891 to 2,601m. The park features unique glacial lakes, granite “stone rivers,” and extensive forests of the endemic Macedonian pine.
Kopanki
A small ski center within Pelister National Park near Bitola, offering 1.2km of slopes with 400m vertical drop between 1,415-1,770m elevation. While the resort itself is modest, it serves as a base for exceptional cat skiing tours on nearby Baba Mountain.
Popova Shapka
Macedonia’s most famous ski resort located on Shar Mountain at 1,800m elevation, offering 18-20km of slopes suitable for all skill levels with excellent freeride terrain and cat skiing opportunities. The resort features snow coverage from November to April and is characterized by numerous sunny days, making it ideal for both professional and recreational skiers.
Vodno
A medium-sized mountain (1,066m) located on the southern edge of Skopje, featuring the iconic Millennium Cross at its peak accessible by cable car. The mountain offers panoramic views of Skopje, multiple hiking trails, and historical landmarks including the Saint Panteleimon Monastery.
Ponikva
Ponikva is a tourist center and weekend settlement located in the Osogovski Mountains in eastern Macedonia, approximately 20 km north of Kočani at an elevation of 1,560 meters. The area features dense forests and diverse vegetation suitable for year-round tourism, with growing potential as a winter tourist center and ski resort on Mount Osogovo.
Mihajlovo
Mihajlovo is a mountain resort and ski center located on Mount Kozuf (Kozhuf), approximately 40 kilometers from Kavadarci in southern Macedonia. The resort sits at an elevation where Mediterranean influences meet mountain air, creating a unique microclimate with dense beech and pine forests, offering year-round recreation including skiing, hiking, and mountain biking.
